Leadership and Content Expert Volunteer Roles

The next step in your professional journey is to get involved! Consider joining other talented oncology nurses who give of their time and expertise in roles that lead, govern, or conduct the work of ONCC. Targeted calls are issued for many roles with ONCC, including the Board of Directors. However, you can voice your interest in any volunteer opportunity with ONCC by completing our Engagement Interest Form at any time and we will keep you informed of upcoming opportunities that match your interests.

Leadership and Governance Roles and Opportunities

Individuals willing and prepared to take on leadership positions in the governance of ONCC play a critical role in guiding our strategy and growth as well as ensuring our processes and decisions are fair and consistent.

ONCC Board of Directors

Lead the organization.

Responsible for setting strategy and direction for ONCC, ensuring the necessary resources, and providing oversight—the Board of Directors is composed of 9-10 voting members that represent the certificant population of ONCC’s credentials and two non-voting members. Most of the voting members are recruited by the ONCC Nominating Committee and candidates may self-nominate. ONCC strives to have a board that is balanced with regard to areas of expertise, educational background, nursing roles, practice settings, geographic location, and years of experience. Minorities (including male nurses) are encouraged to apply. The Board meets in-person three times a year and may meet virtually 1-2 times as needed. 

Time requirement: 65-70 hours/year including travel. 

Term: Three (3) years with potential to be re-appointed for one (1) additional 3-year term.

Nominating Committee

Recruit ONCC's leaders.

Responsible for recruiting and selecting a slate of candidates for open seats on the ONCC Board of Directors annually and general development of emerging leaders within the ONCC certificant community. The committee is composed of 5-7 members—all of whom must be ONCC certified. The committee meets once in-person and 2-3 times virtual each year to work on recruitment efforts, and to evaluate, interview, and select candidates to be proposed to the Board. 

Time requirement: 35-40 hours/year. 

Term: One (1) year, renewable not to exceed three (3) consecutive years.

Appeals Committee

Help ensure fairness in our decisions.

Responsible for reviewing all appeals made by individuals who have been denied certification or who have had sanctions imposed on their certification. This committee is composed of five (5) voting members, none of whom concurrently serve as a member of the ONCC Board of Directors or any other ONCC committee. All members should be knowledgeable about nursing credentialing or certification processes, and at least two should hold active ONCC certification. Members of the committee meet as needed during the year (typically 2-5 times) for 1-hour virtual meetings. 

Time requirement: Approximately 5 hours/year. 

Term: One (1) year, renewable up to three (3) consecutive years.

Special Task Forces and Working Groups

Make things happen as needed.

Responsible for assisting ONCC staff in developing new programs, reviewing policies/requirements, exploring emerging trends/issues, or completing other strategic initiatives (e.g., competency models). These often shorter-term, ad hoc opportunities may be perfect for those wanting to engage and contribute but who are unable to commit to longer-term assignments. Each group will meet on a cadence (in-person or virtually) as needed for the project and details will be provided in the call for content experts for each opportunity. 

Time requirement and term varies depending on the project.

 

Certification Program Roles and Opportunities

All content experts involved in the following opportunities are selected to be reflective of the population certified by the respective certification program and regarding areas of expertise, educational background, nursing roles, practice settings, geographic location, and years of experience. Minorities (including male nurses) are encouraged to apply.

Test Development Committees

Help create the exams.

Responsible for the development of a certification test, these committees are composed of seven members including the chair. Members of the committee meet one to three times a year for either item writing or form review. 

Time requirement: OCN program-Approximately 40 hours/year; Other programs-32 hours/year. 

Term: five (5) years with potential appointment for one (1) additional year.

ILNA Committees

Guide the renewal requirements.

Responsible for the development of the Individual Learning Needs Assessments (ILNA), these committees are composed of five members including the chair. Members of the committee meet one to two times a year for either item writing or form review. 

Time requirement: OCN program-Approximately 40 hours/year; Other programs-32 hours/year. 

Term: five (5) years with potential appointment for one (1) additional year.

Role Delineation Study (RDS) Task Force

Assist in updating the exams.

Members assist in the development of new test specifications / content outline for the certification program for which the RDS is being conducted. These committees are composed of varying numbers of members. Members of each committee meet three times during the Role Delineation process (in-person and/or virtually). 

Time requirement: Approximately five (5) days including prep time for meetings. 

Term: Approximately four (4) months.

Standard Setting Task Force

Help set the passing score.

Members participate in the activities that help set a test's passing score. The task force is composed of 12 members. Members of the task force meet 1-2 times (in-person or virtually) during the Standard Setting process. 

Time requirement: Approximately three (3) days including meeting prep time. 

Term: Approximately three (3) months.

All Subject Matter Experts must be active as oncology nurses with an ONCC certification unless the project call for content experts stipulates otherwise; able and willing to travel, follow guidelines, and be trained in exam development techniques. Content Experts must not be associated with any test preparatory organization or activity or with a competing credentialing organization.
