Katie Tomaszczuk Named 2024 CPHON of the Year
The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) announces Katie Tomaszczuk, BSN, RN, CPHON®, BMTCN® as the 2024 Certified Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse (CPHON®) of the Year. Tomaszczuk is a Pediatric Oncology Nurse IV at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
This award recognizes Tomaszczuk for her achievements in oncology nursing practice, nursing service, and promotion of certification.
Tomaszczuk advocates for certification as a nurse in the Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy Unit as well as in her role serving on numerous hospital committees and councils. As chair of the Clinical Advancement Committee, she has inspired many nurses to participate in the organization’s Clinical Advancement Program (CAP) for bedside nurses, which requires certification for progression to advanced levels.
In clinical practice, Tomaszczuk has led projects to reduce central line associated infections, improve standardized medication administration, advance early recognition of sepsis, enhance oral care compliance, and several other policy and process initiatives to improve pediatric oncology\hematology nursing practice. She is also a relief staff leader and preceptor for new hires.
ONCC presented Tomaszczuk with the award at the ONCC Recognition Breakfast for Oncology Certified Nurses on September 13 in Salt Lake City, Utah, during the Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses (APHON) Annual Conference.
